A Case Study of ELL Student
As a student, I face challenges in my education due to my difficulties with communication and studying English. My family and background are non-English speaking, and I require higher-level instruction in both language and academic subjects. Despite these challenges, I have strengths such as being a risk-taker and enjoying difficult tasks. If it wasn't for my language barriers, I have the potential to excel in my studies. My diverse cultural background allows me to approach problems from different perspectives, and I can work well with my classmates. I have a natural curiosity and eagerness to learn, but due to my vocabulary limitations, lack of conceptual knowledge, and difficulty understanding language, I may struggle with academic terminology and constructing sentences. Learning new words and communicating can also be a hindrance in making friends. It is not out of hesitation that I may have trouble following instructions, but rather a result of not fully comprehending the language being used. This may also lead to grammatical errors when I speak.
My teacher can provide support in various ways to help me succeed. Using visual aids and diagrams can help me understand complex concepts. Modeling the steps of a process or demonstrating the desired outcome can also aid my understanding. Speaking slowly and giving me time to process ideas can help me articulate my thoughts more clearly. Providing different ways of presenting information can showcase my creativity and understanding. I also appreciate the use of simple language to explain difficult concepts. Asking alternative or text-based questions can simplify answers for me. It would also be beneficial for me to regularly practice reading and writing in English, and my teacher can encourage and motivate me in this area. Additionally, providing popular literature in my native language for me to read and answer comprehension questions about can also aid my progress. My teacher's one-on-one instruction has been highly beneficial, and I can work from home, which allows for additional work to be assigned. However, my shyness and language barrier make it difficult for me to establish friendships and participate in outdoor activities. If my teacher can arrange for opportunities to engage in indoor sports or activities with other students in a controlled setting, it would greatly assist me in connecting with my peers. As long as my teacher provides clear and repeated instructions, I am capable of following directions and completing tasks. I may also use various gestures to communicate my understanding or reaction. With my teacher's support, I hope to increase my vocabulary and improve my ability to express myself more comprehensively. As an English Language Learner (ELL) student, I, like many others, struggle with speaking. Using visual aids and diagrams can also help understand difficult concepts. Modeling processes and demonstrating the final product can also aid in comprehension for ELL students.
